How often have fellow Canberrans heard "Canberra is crap?", "There is nothing to do here?" "The coffee is better in (Name a state)".
Well as I ponder over my past 21 years of life in this here town I thought what better way to say goodbye to my beloved then by informing those not familiar with the rad stuff here. Today's journey begins in my favourite coffee shop.
When this nerd want to pay for coffee I want several things: No-one
to say to their kids "Go talk to the lady with pink hair", due to the
importance of coffee in my life I want a perfect cup every time and
food not made with wonder white bread.
We head out early to quiet Fyshwick on a Saturday. There are no kids
and we love to sit outside and listen to the blissful morning utes
Those who know me well, know what a snooty coffee lover I am. I hate when I can taste burnt beans, when it's too frothy as they don't know how to brew soy milk or when they spill it when they carry it to our table. Ona's coffee has never disappointed me. They have won many awards due to their hard work and dedication. Making soy coffee is harder as the milk is harder to froth. My coffee is always at drinking temperature, never tastes like burnt soy and is super smooth. We will often drink a few cups while eating breakfast and get one to go, they are that good.
Liam's favourite: The big Breakfast. Scrambled free range egg, roast tomato, ever so tasty potato rosti, bacon and my favourite blanched spinach. Yummers. The big breakfast at Ona is far beyond other places. It's always fresh, no burnt or watery eggs, the rosti is always cooked all the way through (other places leave a raw potato taste in your mouth). Liam says the bacon is mega crispy and flavoursome. And the spinach.... mmmmmm... the best I've ever had. Sometimes I order it by it's self with toast.
Spanish Style Tortilla: Chorizo sausage, Free range scrambled egg, roasted capsicum and rocket salad in a toasted tortilla ; drizzled with fresh aioli.
I get the same food every time. Why would you mess with perfection? Sour Cherry toast with orange mascarpone. The toast tastes handmade and fresh. Never burnt and lightly buttered. The light orange tang of the mascarpone is so decedent I feel super rad after eating it every time.
Thank you Ona Coffee Fyshwick. You have never been a let down, always have fantastic staff and baristas and when I leave Canberra I will miss you like a fat kid misses cake.
