I have begun work on my most important cosplay yet. In just under 3 weeks the magical Dante Basco Aka Rufio from the film Hook and all round mega babe is attending Oz Comiccon here in Melbourne. To honour his awesomeness the only way I know how I am recreating his costume so that when I meet him I can yell Bangarang and poke him with the coconut sword.
There are a lot of pieces to this costume and I am working on a very small budget so a lot of things will be second hand or crafted by yours truly. I begun by making Rufio's shirt. I used a plain black shirt I found at the bottom of my cupboard and used a strip of red material left over from my Carrie Kelley Robin cosplay. I used fabric glue and glued it around the neck of the shirt. Total cost: Free. I am not sure if I will be brave enough on the day to cut it into a crop shirt like Rufio's so for now I shall leave it as is.
I needed quite a lot of fake leather to make up the jacket, skirt and jewellery of the costume so I opted for buying this large kids jacket for $9 at a thrift store.
First I cut off the sleeves and bottom of the jacket and put them to one side. I also pulled out all the lining of the jacket as it looked really messy. Rufio's jacket doesn't have a collar like this but it it the best I can do.
To make Rufio's skirt I used the arms of the jacket. I made a cut down the middle of the arm and cut off the cuffs, I also removed the lining leaving me with one piece of fabric.
I then made one tasseled skirt piece and two thin straps per arm and sewed it into a little wrap around skirt. It's very pretty and I can't wait to add beads.
When working on the cosplay plans I noticed that Rufio has a chunky ring on but I could not get a good enough picture of it. I decided to head to Twitter on the off chance a fan of Dante's could help me. My lovely pal Anna from Glitzy Geek Girl sent me a wonderful reference page and then BAM Dante Basco himself answered to let me know the ring was made out of a cow vertebrae. Rad!!!
I have a ton more work to do on it today. My wig has arrived and has to be brushed out, styled and dyed. Stay tuned to the blog for more Rufio Cosplay updates in the coming weeks.
