One of the most asked questions on my blog is 'How do I get into reading comics?'. It can be extremely overwhelming from the amount of titles, types and the thought of comic book stores. Today I thought I would teach you guys how to get into reading comic books. Wether you have never read one or maybe you're just starting out, this post and video should help you on your way.
Comics Aren't All About Superheroes
The first thing you should know is that there is more than one genre of comic books. Superheroes aren't to everyone's taste, but they do dominate the market. People tend to focus on superheroes, but just like novels and movies you can read a huge range of comics. Autobiographical, indie, romance, cooking, horror and noir. If there is a genre you're interested in there is a range of comic books for you to check out. In the video below I got through a few of the genres and talk about some of my favourite comics. I'm currently reading a horror comic called 'Nailbiter' about a town that breeds serial killers, and an indie comic called 'Seconds' all about having the ability to change the past. It's important to think about what kinds of things you enjoy and use that to guide you into which comics to buy.
Types Of Comic Books
There are 3 main types of comic books.
Single issues: Come out weekly, fortnightly or monthly. They are genuinely part of an ongoing story which means you will have to go to the store each week to insure you get all the parts of the story. You can get something called a standing order which means the comic book store will out aside all the single issue comics you need each week when they come in and you can pick them up when it suits you.
Trades: These are books that collect 5-6 of the single issues. They are released a few months after the last single issue of a story arc is printed. This means if you choose to read in trades you will be around 6 months behind in comic book gossip.
Graphic Novels: A self contained story often released as one big book and on occasion in single issues then turned into a book.Where Can I Get Comics?
It doesn't matter where you are in the world from a farm, to a relatives house or the city you can get your hands on some comic books. For those who don't have a comic book store near them you can buy them very easily online from Ebay to Amazon. There are also websites like Comic Book Resources that help you find comics that you might want to check out.
My favourite way to buy comics is at my local comic book store- All Star Comics. The staff are always so knowledgeable and helpful and the atmosphere always makes me excited to read more. I often leave with an armful of comics and head to my local coffee shop immediately to read for hours. If you're not sure where your local comic book store is you can try the Comic Shop Locator. Comic stores are a great way to by comics, but also to make new friends and get involved in the community.
I hope this blog post will help some of you guys make the jump into reading comic books. It can seem so daunting, but once you read your first one you will realise there is a whole magical world waiting for you in those pages.
Be sure to watch the accompanying video for examples of single issue, trades and graphic novels. I also take you to my favourite comic book store All Star Comics to show you around.
