It was late Friday night while working the door to the opening of the new All Star Comics Melbourne when my rad friend Mike asked "Did you see the pic I put on your Facebook wall 30 mins ago". I replied no then quickly took a peek on my phone. There he was- Jason Momoa, my beautiful Aquaman gazing deep into my soul. I dropped the basket of comics I was holding all over the floor much to the amusement of those around me.
From the moment they announced Arthur Curry Aka Aquaman would hit the big screen I have been bouncing off walls. To finally see Aquaman taken seriously amongst comic book fans and those that only know him from Big Bang Theory would be my ultimate goal.
Seen as a joke for most of his comic book life, Aquaman stood out to me the moment I picked up the first issue of the new 52 series in 2011. There he stood in the middle of Amnesty Bay with his epic gold trident in hand. Evil had befallen the city and it was up to Arthur to set things right. As be begun to help he was mocked. Even the police laughed at him saying "Go back to the water Aquaman, what power do you have on land?". But this rad dude just ignored them all for he is better than most, he fought back using the water around him to bring order back on land. I loved how he handled himself and that no matter how hard it was he continued to do the right thing. I really look up to Aquaman. When water rushes from the sea and as Aquaman slams his trident to the ground with a mighty clap of thunder people will finally see what I see. Aquaman is the most awesome dude in comic book land.
The casting of Jason Momoa is perfect. A handsome warrior man not to be messed with. I am a little sad that we won't be seeing the iconic green and orange suit as it is so ingrained in the character like Superman's emblem or Power Girl's red cape. But I feel the change of costume will have the character taken more seriously and is more in sync with the other character designs of the new films. You wouldn't want him looking as cartoonish as Green Lantern did. And lets be honest I am just so gosh darn happy to see the iconic belt emblem and scales on the armour and the tribal tattoos. He looks tough and ready for battle. And lets just say the grey in the beard and lack of shirt makes me even more happy. (hehehe) The line unite the seven leads me to believe we are uniting the 7 seas or perhaps the 7 members of the justice league.
Here is a video of my initial reaction to the casting of Jason Momoa from last year.
I can not wait to see Arthur up their on the big screen along side the more popular superheroes. I can not wait for people to start coming into All Star Comics Melbourne asking for the best Aquaman comics and where to start. It's a good time to be a fan of Aquaman and now... AQUAMOA!
