At the Ends of the Earth (written by Jesse Young) and George and Johnny (written and illustrated by Savanna). Savanna is a friendly young lady who loves all things cute. She has such talent and a passion for comics that I wanted to share it with you all.
1. What was the comic book that first ignited your passion for comics?
When I was in 1st grade my older brother gave me a volume of Ranma 1/2 for Christmas. I was instantly obsessed with comics. I started to make them myself in 3rd grade and had a pile of spiral bound notebooks filled with comics made up from the top of my head. They were very heavily based on whatever media I was ingesting, and frankly pretty terrible. ha ha ha
2. What comic would you recommend to someone who has never read one before?
Hmm, That's a really tough question. I think it depends on what kind of genre you're interested in. If you're into comedy and romance, I think the obvious choice is Scott Pilgrim. SP is incredibly approachable and hilarious, it's a good starter comic for everyone. If you're into history I'd recommend Maus or Persepolis, they're classics. Oh! This One Summer is amazing too if you like an indie-movie sort of feel. All that said though, if you want to get into Superheroes read any number one that's come out in the last 3 years. With all the movies and tv coming out, the comic industry is actively trying to make it possible for people to pick up comics without prior knowledge. If you don't wanna get into single issues...Pick up a Batman trade! The Long Halloween is a good one.
3. How do you share your love of comics with others?
By making comics! I've been working on comics professionally for the last year and a half, and independently all my life.
4. What is your favourite comic book memory?
When I first moved to Australia with my partner last year, I didn't know a single person in Melbourne. No one tells you that after you're done with school meeting people is really hard. After a few friendless months, I heard about The All Star Women's Comic Book Club through my partner's co-worker. Despite being incredibly nervous I went by myself and met so many nice girls. In addition to the friends I made at the club, I also have connected with fellow comic creators who live in the area through twitter. I owe my whole social life to comics right now. Comics are the only reason I have any friends at all here, and that's honestly really heart-warming to me.
5. Favourite comic book character of all time?
Tim Drake (before the new 52). I have a reason...but it would start getting really nerdy in here if I explained.
6. What message would you like to give Nerd Burger readers who are too nervous about reading comics?
GO READ COMICS! GO DRAW COMICS! GO WRITE COMICS! If you like a comic, tweet or email the publisher or creator. Let your love be known! Comics are a labor of love and take so much work. Don't ever be afraid to get into comics. There's a comic for everyone.
I hope you all enjoyed the first of many interviews for this new ongoing series Comics Are For Everyone. It is my hope that by reading about all the different people who read comics and have them share their passion, it will encourage you to pick up a comic book and read with us.
Thank you so much to Savanna for being a part of this. You are such a talented and lovely person and I feel so lucky to have met you. Please feel free to tweet her @srganuch! If you interested in looking at here artwork please visit: http://savi-bunnyart.tumblr.com/.
