A few months ago I decided to I wanted to learn how to play Magic the gathering. I had always wanted to join in when I see people playing at cons but was always too shy to ask. Magic seemed so elitist and complex, but what I found was quite the opposite.
I was lucky to have my good friends Jimmy and Fred take time out of their days to explain how the game worked and meet up before work each Saturday to play.
The deck I have been playing the most with is the intro deck to battle of Zendikar using the colours Blue Green. It is a deck that uses a lot of little soldiers to build and army and help defend. I bought it and a 20 sided dice for less than $30AUS and have even won a few games which goes to show with a little money and some patient friends you can join in the fun too. And if you want to go all out (which I always do) you can buy adorable covers for your cards to protect them and a matching box. These pop tart cats are my favourite.
For me Magic the gathering is all about getting involved and creating a world. I see myself as a grand wizard who directs an army. I begin with 7 cards from my deck. Some may be creatures, some sorcery and some land. From there I can build a world filled with forests and rivers with creatures protecting my creation. I get so involved and tend to say a few swears as 9 out of 10 times my creation gets slaughtered with nothing left but the ashes of what was formerly my love.
It's funny how the public views games like Magic to be anti social when I found that I have been the most social I have ever been and even made new connections with people due to their love of the game. Once I told people I was starting to play, customers at work, fans and even friends all started telling me they all played and some even gave me cards to help build my deck. We even found new recruits to teach and play with us.
If I'm completely honest with you I was a little lonely before Magic came into my life. I never felt comfortable at pubs or parties. Magic has helped me come out of my shell and get out more. If I have a (what I call) Magic Party coming up I can't sleep and find I have a huge smile on my face all day. I would love to hear from you. Do you play Magic the Gathering? Tell me some of your favourite stories.
