Howdy Nerderinos! It's been quite a while since I've had time to sit down and write. I just got back from holidaying in Tokyo. Liam and I had 9 rad days running around shopping, visiting Disneyland and drinking copious amounts of coffee.
We flew out of Melbourne at midnight and after a 10 hour flight arrived in Tokyo a bit worse for wear. There were still a few hours until we could check in to our hotel in Asakusa so we decided to grab a bite at a local fast food restaurant. I somehow managed to order a salad with 100s of tiny fish on top (I thought they were beans, not great for a vegan) so I ended up just eating rice and drinking a never ending cup of coffee. We were both trying so hard not to fall asleep at the table it was ridiculous. To waste some time we went next door to a shop called Don Quixote which I remembered from our Hawaii trip as well. Full of all kinds of goodies from clothing to toys, makeup... you name it the've got it and most likely in pink, covered in glitter with a cute character on it. Heaven. We wasted so many hours buying blind box toys and finally crashed in the hotel until evening.
We decided to spend our first night wandering down to grab a coffee at Starbucks which was peaceful and delicious. It's currently summer in Japan with high temp and humidity. Ice coffee in air conditioning is such a simple comfort. We then walked down to the Senso-Ji temple., Japan's oldest temple. It looked so beautiful all lit up at night and was so much quieter than when we visited it during the afternoon on our first trip to Japan.
As we wandered back to the hotel we thought our first wonderful day in Tokyo was over... but oh no... not just yet. We stumbled upon an owl cafe. For 890yen we got to sit in a cafe filled with plants, get a free drink from the vending machine... oh and did I mention hang out with owls? It was so incredible. They looked like plush toys and many liked to be patted. They were really well looked after and seemed pretty happy. The cafe staff even let Liam and I hold one each. Luckily I had my camera and was able to film the whole experience.
Exhausted and exhilarated we left our new friends at the owl cafe to go home to sleep. Day two we were off to check out the shopping in Shibuya and hopefully find some rad vintage toys.
